Great to work with, versatile, smart
While I don’t usually refer to hand tools as “smart” I break my own rule with these wood rasps. They’re at least as smart as the owner. It’s no secret that tapered shaping tools give you more control, allow you to do more in tighter situations, but the range of possibilities with the NKTM set of 3 gives good results and adds to your capability. Flat on one side, slightly rounded on the other, right down to the tip, these allow you to efficiently work the edges of through holes and tight angles. I’ve even used these to clean up some hand cut mortices. These seem to cut well at the edges, in both directions and have turned even my worst newby carving project into something approaching respectable. I no longer wincingly reach for any of the rattail files hoping they might be the solution to a shaping problem. The NKTM now live close at hand and occupy a valued place on the bench. As for the gold, or brass, or lunar dust, whatever the coating is, I’m not so sure that adds anything to the performance of the tools. Irrespective, they do work as I was hoping. I find that some things I buy just don’t get the kind of use I was excited about when I bought them. These rasps do. I’m uncertain about how long they’ll last, but if they wear out, for the price I would just get another set. ‘Nuff said.

    Awesome tool for the price!
For the price these are a solid 5 stars. If they were 50 bucks each, Id still give them at least 3 or 4 stars!I carve wood for a living, and rasps are my most used hand tools. I have a wall full of them of all different kinds from cheap to hand stitched French ones.So how do they cut? Not bad at all, especially for the price! The teeth are very consistant. None of those couple teeth just a bit higher than the rest. If you are familiar with the Dragon rasps, they are pretty much exactly the same as their coarse ones. They are also the same shape. The 8 “one is pretty much identical to the small Dragon rasp in size and shape. To compare to the fabled Nicholson 49 &50 they are wider, thinner, pointier, bit stiffer. They are as about aggressive as the older USA made 50 and leave a little nicer of a finish. If a storage case is important, the ones they come with are OK. I doubt Ill ever use them though.I would definately call them a second cut, meaning if you are planning on hogging off a lot of material, its gonna take a while using just this, so get yourself one of those $12 Nicholsons with the big ugly teeth to start with, and finish with these guys. You’ll be ready for 120 sanding in hardwoods. There are a few things that would cause me to knock off a star if they were more expensive, but for the price I accept it.The handles are rubbery type plastic. I like a smoother wooden handle, and one day when I have nothing better to do, I’ll probably make wooden ones. On the plus side they are on there solid and strait. They clog a bit. I’ve used them on hard maple, cherry, and walnut for a couple hours and tried them on white pine bit just a little. Keep a good stiff nylon brush handy and a couple swipes now and then and you’ll be back in business. I have noticed that the clogging is diminishing a bit the more I use them. While these will will not replace anything for me, they have their place. They are great if you teach or do demonstrations where something can easily get lost, broken, or stolen. I Got them for my daughters and step sons so they dont have to wait for someone to get done with a rasp for them to use it and I dont worry about them dropping mine.Knowing what I know about these, I would not hesitate to buy them again!I am attaching a couple photos for comparison to other rasps in size and tooth pattern.Left to right with rasps pointing towards you Nicholson “Woodcraft”, Nicholson 49, The 8″ rasp being reviewed, Dragon rasp coarse, Auriou #10 grain, Dragon rasp fine, bastard file.

    Good price/value balance
These needle files work well, reasonably fast stock removal with minimal tear-out. I’m using them for shaping guitar necks. Handles are pretty comfortable, and the points are sharp but I don’t cut my fingers like I tend to do with a Shinto rasp.Very good at the low price point.

    Impressive
I am a luthier (Guitar building and repair) and had looked at comparable files from a well known luthier supply company but couldn’t justify their price. I thought I’d take chance on these and I’m sure glad I did! They work quite well for my needs. They remove material very quickly and leave a much cleaner rasp mark than others I have tried.

Very good medium rasps for the price
I paid $17 for the two rasps. I don’t think that you can get anything better than these unless you spend many times more. These rasps have what I would consider a medium grain. They cut well and leave a decent surface with minimal tearout. The pointy shape makes them very versatile.I only see two downsides with this set:- The handles are terrible – they’re made from a waxy plastic that feels weird, doesn’t have a good shape, and doesn’t give you a good grip. I threw them away and made wooden handles.- The 8″ and the 10″ have identical grain, and a very similar shape, so there is really no benefit to having both. It would have been nice to get a finer grain on the 8″, but I guess you get what you pay for. Some comparisons to other rasps and wood files:- Compared to a Narex “fine” rasp (the machine stitched kind, not the hand stitched). The NKTM is far superior in every way (except the handle) – it cuts better, has a better shape and leaves a better finish.- Compared to the “fine” side of a Shinto saw rasp – the NKTM cuts a bit slower, and leaves a slightly better finish. Because the NKTM is a conventional cabinet rasp, it is better for curves and tight spots. The Shinto and the NKTM are a good combination for the first and second pass – use the Shinto to quickly remove stock, then refine with the NKTM, then move to something finer.- Compared to an Iwasaki fine-cut wood file – the NKTM is faster and rougher than the Iwasaki. The Iwasaki is a good grit to follow the NKTM.
