    Mostly good
Overall, I really like this plane, the size, the form factor, the function everything seems to work really well the iron quality, however chips really easily. I would rather pay 10 or 15 more dollars just to get a little higher quality iron. Especially because after I spend 20 minutes getting it all dialed in and sharpened only to have it chipped right after that.

    Great for the money
Got this to shave down a door I install in an entryway they was sticking, worked like a charm.I see a lot of people whining about it but don’t let that deter you. You have to set it up correctly to have it work right, which mainly involves making sure the blade is seated right. The shoe was a bit beveled at the front and back but that had no impact on the majority of the cutting surface which was perfectly flat. After taking 2 mins to make sure it was adjusted correctly, I was getting nice long shaves off a pine door, def a win for the price.I don’t know if it’s up to par for someone who’s planing wood every day, but for those of you who will use it intermittently here and there, definitely go for it.

Good price but expect to work on it a lot.
The price is reasonable, and the plane can be a good investment, if you are willing to put in a lot of effort to make it work. The sole of the plane I bought was not flat at all. I spent hours sanding the sole to get it flat. I needed to sand the sides of the adjustable mouth plate, since it was binding. Neither side of the plane blade was flat, so that took a lot of sanding before I could even sharpen it. It took a while to sharpen the blade since it looks as if they used some sort of small diameter cutting wheel to cut the bevel, as there is a definite concavity within the bevel. I had to oil everything since all of the controls on it where very stiff. I had to take a file to the mouth of the plane to smooth it out. I also had to sand the bed of the plane since it was roughly machined. I also had to sand the lever cap so it could set flush on the blade and apply even pressure. Once all of that was done, the plane has been working very well, except for a little too much play or backlash on the blade adjustment system that makes precise adjustments a little difficult.

Decent affordable plane but for the cutter
The cutter needed flattening, sharpening, and honing as expected, and the sole needed significant work to flatten. The parts of the block plane work reasonably well, and I would be happy if it weren’t for the brittleness of the cutter. Cumulatively, I used the plane for no more than an hour (on pine, no less!) and the cutter is chipped across the edge. There’s something zen about sharpening, but that’s just not workable.

For the money, it works. Probably not for a professional, but good enough for my DIY housework!
For the money, it works. Probably not for a professional, but good enough for my DIY housework! It came full of oil from the factory, but a quick wipe down and a little adjustment made it cut just fine.

    Hard to review …
CONSIDERING the price point, there should be reasonable expectations on the product. You should expect to do some flattening, polishing, breaking rough edged, sharpening blade and even some filing if things do not fit well. You should also expect the adjuster to have a fair amount of backlash and the lateral adjustment be finicky. I know that, I have bought SnJ planes before and I still like them.HAVING SAID THAT, my plane has 2 main issues that I would have expected not to be there,1. The mouth is VERY OPEN, in the fully closed position it is 5 mm wide (fully open is 9mm wide). And since the blade protrudes ~2mm for a light shaving from the back of the mouth, that still leaves AT LEAST 3 mm of open space in front of the blade. I cannot imagine needing to open the mouth more than 3mm in front of a blade ever (this is not a scrub plane …).2. Blade steel is very bad. I am not sure if this is a quality control issue, where my specific blade was not tempered correctly, but the steel feels extremely soft and is not able to hold an edge (There is also a lot of chipping happening even when sharpening with a honing guide on water stones). In the future I will get an after-market blade (which will probably cost more than this plane …), but right now it is working for me because I ask from the tool what the tool can provide.

It stays sharp long I use it everyday

I bought this planer to shim down the door as it was rubbing too tightly against the frame. This made it hard to open the door. I thought this planer wouldn’t work well but I was amazed at how well this little tool just shaved off the wood in no time at all. Lots of adjustments and this tool packs some weight for such a small thing. It is not some flimsy tool either. It really works top notch. Very pleased with the planer and purchase.

Blade was not correctly seated, casting badly finished, blade and adjustment stock cannot be secured in place and continuously move from side to side, blade adjuster sits roughly in the palm of your hand. All in all a very poor and disappointing design
