Ugly and awesome
The finish on the wood is crinkled and awful. But I love this plane. Itâs my go to plane. Awesome for the price.

READ THIS BEFOR BUYING!!!!!!!!!
Okay, so you watched Paul Sellers or Johnathan Katz-Moses or even Rob Cosman, renown woodworkers who love working with hand planes and what not, now you’re ready to go and get a “decent” hand plane. You aren’t quite committed enough to spend 3-500 dollars on a wood river or the holy grail of hand planes, Veritas, your clicking and looking, $30 is wayyy to cheap, and you run into the SHOPFOX hand plane for 60 bucks. You click add to cart and deliver. It arrives timely enough, and you are telling yourself that this is ok, I can sharpen it and flatten it ETC. THENa box arrives, you grab it in excitement, and you stop because you hear something rattling around the box, yeah that’s the blade and the chip breaker that weren’t installed. It looks like someone just through it in the box on a Friday afternoon and went home. Yup, that’s what happened to me. The blade has been out of the plane the entire journey. Every time the driver moved the box or dropped it, the blade and chip breaker were slamming into the handle, the body of the plane and it looks like I purchased a saw, that’s how marred the blade is. Am i going to keep it? yes. Reluctantly, I’m going to put a ton of time into flattening the sole, blade, chip breaker, and de bur the entire thing. Why? Because i know that at the price point of 58 dollars, i wont get anything better and honestly i believe practice makes perfect. When i do get a really nice plane, i guarantee i will kick myself in the a$$ for not throwing it away.SHOULD YOU BUY IT ?NONONOeven if it came put together, save your money up and buy a good one.UPDATED BEFORE SUBMISSION.after buying a Wood River , 5-1/2, 5, 4-1/2, a veritas skew rabbit plane and a scrub plane, this plane is going in the trash. I wouldn’t send this POS to my worst enemy.oh, and you can’t even use it for a shooting plane, it’s at the very least 1/4 inch out of square on the sides.scrub plane? no… this thing is garbage (too late to return it) I was so disappointed in the state of this plane coming in the way it did that I can’t even put any more effort into fixing it, I spent the better part of 6 hours just trying to get the sole within a thou and a half, the standard flatness of wood river and veritas. and overall functionality. Save yourself some time and effort. Go to wood river and buy a 5-1/2, this is all you will need if you’re just getting into it. It functions well for a smother and even a jointer. The quality of your tools will make the difference. Trust me.

It takes a lot to get it to work
The bottom line: it’s cutting decently,But it took ages to get there.I’ve set up a low end planes before, so I thought this would be another good challenge. The package arrived open for some reason but everything was in, the iron was bolted to the body so it didn’t shake on travel The machining of the body was so rough that I needed to start with an 80 grit sand paper and still grooves and pores remain on the sole. The blade, cap iron and frog was reasonably workable.I would suggest investing another 20 dollars if you are not ready to put this amount of elbow greese

Beautiful plane for price
Didnât want to fork over $100+ for a jack plane and was looking for something that was not going too cheap. This turned out perfect for a beginner like me and is very well kept during transport (atleast for me). Toe was nice and flat and blade wasnât chipped up and barely needs a bit of sharpening to get it cutting effortlessly.

Expect poor craftsmanship and significant prep
At this price point I wasn’t expecting a lot, and I didn’t get a lot.- Fit and finish is…mostly fine except that mine came with an obviously crooked back handle. I removed it and saw that the drill through is easily 2-3mm off center.- It’s unclear to me whether the frog is actually a separate piece from the sole. It has screws in it, that’s for sure, but the frog adjustment screw doesn’t seem to widen or narrow the mouth in the slightest.- The lateral adjustment lever was bent backwards and needed to be manhandled straight in order to function.- There is also no apparent manual or instructions included, and I’m sure we all are familiar with the nightmare of trying to find any sort of consistent, objective instruction online.- Most troubling were the noticable chips in the cutting edge. Out of the box attempts to plane some work ended in tears and recriminations. I obviously will need to spend quite a bit of time sharpening before this is tool is viable. I am considering just biting the bullet and buying a stanley. I don’t expect any better results out of the box but I’m pretty sure their QA and machining are a little better.- Surprisingly the shoe is nice and flat and square, which doesn’t really seem to be the case for a lot of people.Wrapping up, for what I paid this isn’t the worst tool I’ve ever used. Fit and finish is spotty but not to the point of uselessness, although YMMV based on other reviews. This isn’t exactly a throwaway but it requires more and more complicated prep work than I think most newbies are prepared to take on. The blade on mine is garbage and buyers should expect to spend a lot of time readying it before they get results. The nature of the defects in the piece I got make me think that I could buy another and get a whole new set of problems, or none at all. Which is a huge problem in and of itself because it speaks to poor QA and haphazard machining. If I were to return this, maybe the replacement would have the handle screwed on straight but the mouth would be skewed or the sole would be crooked. Who knows? I would like to know, and that’s why I think in sum that you should probably just spend the extra cash for a tool that is manufactured a little more precisely.

The jack plane arrived and was in great shape for having been an open box product
The jack plane arrived and was in great shape for having been an open box product. The iron was sharp and after a few adjustments I was getting nice, even curls of wood. Definitely a great purchase!

The blade is not square to the body
It looks and feels like a good plane, but the plane blade is just not square to the body. It is so out of square that you cannot adjust it to make straight cuts. The blade is always crooked, so you are taking off more material on one side than the other. I have never been able to use it.

I do fine cabinet work. I needed a 14″ jack to plane my tops and panels after gluing. This is a good product for the price. Solid and well made. It works great.

It looks exactly like a Stanley and works great

The unit I received came in a box that had a hole where the lateral adjustment lever had poked through at some point. The bag it was in had a matching hole. The body was in good shape over all, only one chip in the paint, and the sole was square to the sides for the most part. The sides did angle in after the first half inch. The mouth had a bit of paint that I filed off easily. I disassembled the whole thing to go ever every piece which is where I found the frog had some machining issues on the bottom. I am still working on making everything flat. The blade however needs massive work as it is not square, nor is it the proper width along its length. The blade I received measures 50mm but tapers down to 49mm at the end. This taper starts ~35mm from the end. When I first reground the bevel I ended up having a skewed blade. I am debating on regrinding or getting a good blade from Veritas.

Be prepared for plenty of work getting this plane ready for use.I have been working at smoothing the bottom of this plane. Also, the blade and cap iron are shipped loose in the box, and my plane blade had a large nick in the cutting edge. I am shaping the plane blade for use as a scrub plane, reshaping that cutting edge, so this was not a problem for me. I think it would be annoying for most customers. I had to do plenty of work getting the front and back surfaces of the plane blade flat, and more work reducing the grooves left by the machining of the blade. That said, I have an affordable #5 plane.

This plane is a piece of junk out of the box. The blade was not sharp and badly chipped and the sole was not flat. After half a day of working on it, I managed to make it cut sub-par. Not worth the money.
