The Nicholson flat hand file has a rectangular shape with double-cut American pattern teeth on both sides for smoothing and shaping straight surfaces. The file tapers slightly toward the point in width to ease access into slots. It has double-cut American pattern teeth on each side for rapid material removal and single-cut teeth on the edges for finishing, sharpening, and deburring. The tang can be used with an optional handle for secure gripping (sold separately).
Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth have single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother, more precise finish than equivalent American pattern files.
Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

Excellent file!
I have purchased several files over the years in the big box stores with poor results. I just assumed all files were essentially the same. Wrong! Based on reviews from others, I purchased this file, along with the recommended handle. After attaching the handle, I proceeded to sharpen my garden hoe. What an experience! The file dug into the hoe blade with ease–in fact it was actually fun to use. The file took off the edge, leaving significant iron filings with each pass–such a refreshing experience! I have no reason to believe it will not sharpen lawn mower blades, axes, and any other flat metal edge. It is highly recommend.

Perfect for sharpening shovels and hoes
I use this file with the Nicholson 21474U Universal handle. It is a large file and not every handle fits.It is a very coarse file, designed for rough work. Exactly what I needed.

File was nice and sharp filed off nail heads and a bolt in a hard to reach area. Very sturdy handle. Perfect for the job!

Wow this is Great at Sharpening
Wow! I have tried using some older bastard files and this is by far the best. I did one swipe of the file and it already started to clean up and sharpen my axe. I am excited to keep using this tool.
