    This Works Great
This is the best battery vacuum I have ever seen or used. This is as powerful as my Mini-Shop Vac.As an added benefit if your battery charge drops you can plug it in. Whether on Battery or AC Power the vac seems to have the same function.I have been running mine on the same 4.0 Amp/Hr battery since I got it; I’ve used it for probably 15-20 Minutes and still have 3 Bars on the Battery.** UPDATE ** I have used this vacuum for a few months now and it is still running great. The filter is simply rinsed under running water to clean it; I’ve sucked up all kinds of things including drywall dust and saw dust from my Dewalt sander and the quick emty and cleaning is great. The suction of this vacuum is astonishing especially given that it runs on 20V. I get well over 30 Minutes of solid vacuuming with a 3 Amp/Hr battery. While the power is not real increased by using a 120V outlet it does help with battery usage; though with over 2 dozen batteries that doesn’t effect me too much. This vacuum is just so convenient because of the effectiveness and battery power. It is great being able to quickly clean up a job site that doesn’t have power. I’m nearly elusively running Dewalt Max battery tools now; except for the occasional job my plug in tools are relegated to the garage and because of this vacuum that includes my Shop-Vac.Add (04/24/2016): I have added the 20 Volt Max sliding compound miter saw to my collection and while this vacuumed isn’t a perfect fit a wrap or two with electrical tape makes it one. Added to the saw, to replace its horrible dust collection bag, the combination makes an almost dust free saw. Both work on batteries and allow me to bring the saw right into finished living spaces to cut. Saves time running outside and doesn’t add too much bulk.I have tried the vacuum in wet mode without the filter and this thing sucks, fast, it will fill up its just over a gallon tank within 20-30 seconds. And the float ball stops the suction before too much water gets in.My only real CON with the vacuum is the worthless flat car attachment, it just hasn’t worked for me.As a side note in recently redoing my kitchen pairing this vacuum with my Dewalt Palm sander made sanding the drywall another dust free job.

    Works like a champ
This was a birthday present for our Son-in-Law. He has many batteries to his love of DeWalt products. Works like a champ, cleans even the deep buried dirt. Handy, alway available, battery interchangeable with other DeWalts. He is very happy!!!

Powerful and portable for the job site!
I got this little vacuum after borrowing a similar model from a contractor on a job site. Very handy and easy to use for quick cleaning after projects on the job site.

Good; not as good as previous model
I waited awhile to post this review to see how this vacuum performed for a month or so. I have the older DC500 model, and was always very pleased with it. It worked well, was quieter than most similar products, and lasted for years with a lot of use. Finally, it started hesitating to start, and when I took it apart, I could find no problem, and the motor seemed clean and the shaft moved freely, so, while I still suspect a motor problem, I decided to get a new machine instead of springing for a new motor (still available, however) for the old vacuum; especially since I wasn’t even sure that that was the problem. The new model is a little different, and I’m not impressed with the changes. It is still quieter than most, and works effectively. I leave it plugged in in my workshop most of the time, and use it enough to have to empty it about once a week. I do not use it on battery power, so I have no comment about that feature. I give this vacuum four stars mostly on the basis of it’s effectiveness and my expectation of longevity, but otherwise I would rank it lower for the following reasons.Unlike the old model DC500, there is no cover for the battery plug-in area, leaving the contacts much more likely to pick up dust and grit in the shop. As I said, I don’t use that feature much, but I do have other DeWalt tools with compatible batteries, so I wouldn’t want to find myself wanting to use it on batteries and find it gunked up. I duct taped a Ziploc bag hanging over the battery contact area–a solution I think will achieve the desired effect; although unsightly. Another issue, albeit a minor issue, is that unlike the earlier model, there is no drainage port in the base. I wouldn’t remove any stars because of that, but it bears mentioning if a potential user doesn’t have the muscle to lift up a vac base full of water and turn it over to empty it. I haven’t actually done a comparison test on this, but it APPEARS that the new model would hold less in its base than the older model. In any case, the filter is definitely smaller than before, so if a user happened to have an extra filter or two on hand for the older model, they will not fit the new model. Most annoying of all of my quibbles is the hose. The hose on my old machine is still good, but the fit is not the same, so my old hose cannot be used on the new machine. Besides that–and this may just be my particular unit rather than all of them–the hose on the new unit fights removal and requires considerably more effort to remove when I want to switch from vacuum mode to blowing mode. It is somewhat more cooperative when It’s time to remove it from the blowing port. Lastly, and also having to do with the hose, the rigid attachment at the hose end that receives the various extensions and other attachments came off in my hand while using it to vacuum up some sawdust on my workbench one day! I tried to kind of screw it back onto the corrugated hose, but that was insufficient and I ended up with the duct tape again; this time to secure the hose end onto the body of the hose. This never happened with years of use on the older model.I’m still giving four stars–at least on an interim basis–because of effectiveness, relative quietness, and EXPECTED longevity. It does bother me, however, that this vacuum has these issues that it’s predecessor did not.

    Gets the job done!
I bought this for my vehicle and patio… it is compact enough to move thruout the vehicle, the handle makes it easy to carry and move around. The battery option is great as well. It has the attachments I need all right there on the machine. I can’t speak highly enough about this product! I LOVE IT!

In consideration that some have found the suction performance of this vacuum limited, I hesitated from buying this vacuum for over a year hoping that DeWalt would bring out a newer version that has more power. I’m passionate about DeWalt tools and I have allot of 20V-Max tools and batteries so despite the reviews presented herein, when my old 5 gal shop vacuum started to “grind to a halt” I decided to throw caution to the wind and buy it. To be clear, this is NOT a “shop vacuum” and to compare with one would be unfair. Suction power from even a cheap 5 gal conventional vacuum lays waste to this unit. Even small corded shop vacuums use 5 A motors and this one has a 2.6 A motor (based on the label) so it has half the power. The suction is good and usable but not truly powerful. If you have a big mess to clean up, need to root-out hairs from a carpet, or you want to clean your car or truck get something else. Also, like cheap vacuums (all types), the suction air that passes through the fan also cools the motor so don’t use this for cleaning up fine dust like drywall/concrete/talc/flour/rock, etc. Used this way, the filter will plug up in short order and will burn out the motor so if you have to tackle this get something else.Below are the merits of this unit and the rationale I have for scoring five stars:1. Construction quality – Well built as evidenced by a neoprene rubber gasket sealing the bottom to the top. This optimizes suction and prevents leaks if collecting water. The on/off switch “clacks” with authority just like the side clamps for the bottom. Feels consistent with DeWalt quality.2. Versatility – Go cordless or corded when the battery goes flat. The unit switches almost seamlessly between battery or 120V. Note however, while on 120 V, there is a noticeable loss of power. I don’t know exactly why but I suspect that there is just one 18V DC motor that gets power from either the battery directly or through a AC/DC rectifier where there may be some power losses in that circuitry on its way to the motor. Works with standard 1 1/4 in vacuum hose attachments and can be used as a blower (for small jobs).3. Wet or dry applications – This unit does either and when filled with water, a ball shuts off the air flow to the fan. The owner’s manual recommends that the filter remain in place at all times, even when vacuuming water as it is made of plastic. The filter is fine enough to use as a backup to a cannister or upright vacuum for cleanup of ordinary house dust so it won’t recirculate this dust and can be washed easily. You can’t do that with a shop vacuum unless a paper filter and bag are installed.4. Capacity – With 2 gal capacity and a micro-screen filter cartridge, this vacuum makes a better choice than a hand-held vacuum as it has more suction power so even with a 2 A-Hr battery, there’s enough time and power to clean up lint, dust and crumbs under the whole couch or fridge. You can even take this camping with you in case you need to clean up sand from the inside the tent or RV.5. Noise – Quiet enough to use as an alternative to a cannister vacuum if you need suction to clean out the dust from inside computers and other electronics.6.
