The 18V LXT® Brushless Cordless ½” Hammer Driver-Drill (XPH14Z, tool only) breaks new ground with a full 1,250 in.lbs. of Max Torque for the most demanding drilling and driving applications and 0-31,500 BPM for faster hammer drilling into masonry materials. Other features include an all-metal ½” self-ratcheting chuck for improved bit-gripping strength, L.E.D. lights, and a rubberized soft grip for increased comfort. It’s part of Makita’s expanding 18V LXT System, the world’s largest cordless tool system powered by 18V lithium-ion slide-style batteries. Makita® 18V LXT® Lithium-Ion Batteries have the fastest charge times in their categories, so they spend more time working and less time sitting on the charger. For improved tool performance and extended battery life, Makita created Star Protection Computer Controls™. Star Protection is communication technology that allows the Star Protection-equipped tool and battery to exchange data in real time and monitor conditions during use to protect against overloading, over-discharging and overheating. For increased versatility, the tool can also be powered by Makita® 18V LXT® Lithium-Ion Batteries with the star symbol on the battery indicating Star Protection inside.

Customers say

Customers like the power and torque of the drill. They mention it’s a powerhouse, moves easily, and doesn’t get the funky burning metal smell. However, some customers have reported that the internal clutch on setting 1 started slipping out during use. Opinions are mixed on the build quality.

Fantastic drill. Best one I had.
Got this drill on sale and bought without the battery. Added a 5AH battery and have used it a lot, all kinds of jobs over a year. Reliable, strong and well built, it’s a beast. I had other Makitas, Dewalts and Milwaukees, this the best one so far. Will be getting another one if the sale comes again.

    Great drill!
Used and abused and still cleaned up good. Works great!

    KILLER IMPACT DRILL
Didn’t want to review until I used on of many different types of surfaces/materials. I seem to be always drilling into stubborn concreate, masonry, bricks and especially thick lumber (not just studs). This drill is amazing once you get the hang of it. I don’t even use the optional brace Handel (which I should) .. it’s just easy to manipulate and the motor doesn’t get the funky ‘burning metal’ smell which I can’t stand. Highly recommend!

Great drill all around, with one annoying flaw.
After using a number of brands, (Makita, Milwaukee, DeWalt) I find this to be a very good drill overall but it has some features I don”t like. The quality, battery life, and speeds/power do overpower those negatives though and I would buy it again if I had to.My major issue, like other’s I have read, is that the drill is very sensitive to its drill or hammer drill function. While drilling, and without touching the chuck it may slip into hammer mode and is very tough to move out of. The dial isn’t the most accurate in that regard. All other settings it moves easily and clicks solidly though. But drill or hammer is a very delicate balance and requires some force to move in/out of.The other complaint is the handle can only be installed at a perfect 90 degrees to the drill. There is no other option. My favorite part of the dewalt version is being able to move the handle into any position, all 360 degrees. Its no the biggest issue, but can be annoying sometimes, and because of that I avoid using it at all.Besides those two complaints, amazing drill. Plenty of torque, hammer function works great, nice led light and the speeds are very user friendly.

    The bomb!
My third Makita drill in 30-ish years. (Likely more years). Second LXT drill. The last one was overextended due to how I used it and I let the smoke out while boring a big ol’ hole. I deserved it!This one is brushless and more powerful so should be good for a while. Nice balance, good power, sweet finesse with trigger. Who could ask for more?

    Weak clutch
I bought this battery powered drill despite my previous disappointment with the Makita drill clutches. After several drill clutches failed to release drill bit I went after another vendor drill. Despite my apprehensions with buying this brand I needed a drill with a handle to aid in holding the drill in place. Well I bought this drill about three months ago. And like my previous disappointment in the clutch system this drill let me down. I have a drill bit and because of cheap parts I can’t remove the drill bit. I’m guessing it’s due to plastic gears that are weak and not durable. I do NOT recommend buying any Makita products since they are poorly made of plastic parts that are weak and can’t even hold up for intermittent use over a few months. DO NOT PURCHASE, poor gears that will not hold up. Junk in my opinion!!!

Happy with my purchase. Tested stainless steel and granite drill , drill thru without problem.

  13. Murat P

I got this for myself as my old hammer drill finally broke down. Its torque is great for a cordless drill (140nm) and overall I’ve had no issues drilling holes in concrete and wood with this.
